The United Nations office in Colombo assured that the matter regarding the government’s move to postpone the Local Government election would be brought in at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva and UN Headquarters, National People’s Power (NPP) MP Vijitha Hearth said yesterday.
He told the media after handing over a letter regarding the matter to the UN Office in Colombo that it was a violation of the Constitution, human rights of the people and deprivation of the right to vote.
The MP said Parliament, as the authority with financial powers, has allocated Rs. 11 billion for the Elections Commission for 2023 through the budget and that however, the Finance Ministry Secretary has refused to provide the required money for the LG polls.
“Rs.10 billion has been allocated for the LG polls alone. It is in violation of the Constitution for the Finance Ministry Secretary to deny allocating money for the election. We handed over a letter to the UN office regarding these unlawful actions,’ he said.
