The National People’s Power (NPP) government must secure a massive majority at the general election to implement its programmes successfully, swiftly and in a revolutionary manner, President and NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said yesterday.

Addressing the NPP candidates of the general election, he said the power they expect is not only in quantity but in quality as well.

He said the power only with a huge number of MPs will not be sufficient if the MPs elected do not have good qualities.

The President said governments with two-thirds majority in 2010 and 2020 failed because the MPs lacked quality.

The President said NPP was able to prove wrong the false allegations made by the opposition camp during the presidential election campaign even before 21 days lapsed since the Presidential election.

He said the opposition camp is now left without any slogan for the general election.

“The opposition camp made unfounded criticisms against us. They said there will be riots after NPP’s victory and there will be queues for cooking gas and fuel and the rupee will be depreciated against the US dollar. They stated Sri Lanka will be an isolated country in the world. But, all these claims have been shattered before their eyes within 21 days,” he said.
The President said the people in the North, East and upcountry had kept their trust on the NPP and added that there has been a huge revival in the North after NPP’s victory.

“We will be able to secure more votes in the North, East and in the estate sector in the upcountry,” he said.

President Dissanayake said the NPP was able to introduce the word ‘retire’ into Sri Lankan politics where none of the politicians retired in the past other than defeat in the election or die.
“Most of the former MPs have withdrawn from the election campaign this time. This is the transformation people expected,”.

He said some people claim that NPP’s team is inexperienced and added that even though most of them did not have Parliamentary experience, but they have long experiences in politics.
