The Corona Omicron sub-variant (BF.7), which is rapidly spreading in several foreign countries, including China, has no effect in Sri Lanka, Health Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Samitha Ginige said. Addressing the media, he said that Sri Lanka is also closely studying the variant.
As the responsible ministry, we are closely monitoring the increase and spread of the coronavirus sub-variant among the community. We are studying and following the instructions given by the World Health Organization (WHO). Every time we observe about diseases spreading in other countries around us.
Considering the above aspects, Sri Lanka has no considerable concerns regarding the new Omicron sub-variant, but immediate safety measures will be taken if the situation changes and starts affecting our country.
This new omicron sub-variant is spreading rapidly in other countries. The knowledge related to the new omicron sub-variant is limited. According to the information gathered, it was revealed that this sub-variant can spread fast. However, no evidence was gathered to determine whether the variables caused complications.
Prefer it or not, we have to live with COVID for several years, and the risk is still around. With this condition, there is a possibility of an emerging minor or high risk of COVID sub-variant in the future, and we cannot say that the risk is minimal.
Therefore, Dr. Ginige requested that people always follow the health guidelines and obtain the booster dose, the Sinopharm vaccine at the nearest Medical Officer of Health (MOH) office or hospital.
