President Ranil Wickremesinghe nor the government, have any intention whatsoever to differ the Local Government (LG) polls and as such it is up to the Election Commission (EC) to hold a free and fair election, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardana said yesterday.

Responding to Daily Mirror at the weekly post cabinet news briefing last morning, Minister Gunawardana said the UNP-SLPP led alliance has already begun its electoral process and applications have already been called from suitable persons for consideration for nominations.

“The preliminary work for the LG polls have been started by the UNP as well as the SLPP. The preparation of nomination lists are in progress. Both parties have come to an agreement to contest the LG polls as an alliance,” Minister Gunawardana added.

The party hierarchy of the UNP and the SLPP, have instructed their grassroots level organizers to get ready for the LG polls, he said.
