No report yet on female giraffe’s death; unhappy with zoo management: Union

• Union president alleges the animal was killed
• Says that there is no one at the zoological gardens who could take responsibility for the animals

The Sri Lanka Podujana Zoological Garden Employees’ Union today claimed that they are unhappy with the activities of the administration of the Zoological Gardens, Dehiwala adding that there is still no report received over the death of the female giraffe.  

Union president Krishantha Christopher told the Daily Mirror that it had been two months since the female giraffe had died and there have been no details received relating to its death.  
The female giraffe at the National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwala died on December 7, 2023 and the union president alleges that the animal was killed.   

“Giraffes are classified as critically endangered animals. He mentioned that the giraffes in the Dehiwala Zoo received special attention from the department, symbolized by a spotlight on their conservation efforts,” he said.  

“The union has lodged numerous complaints with the Ministry, urging the removal of an unqualified veterinary doctor from the Dehiwala zoo to safeguard the well-being of the animals.  
Christopher claimed that there is no one at the zoological gardens who can take responsibility for the animals.
