In bid to relieve students from the burden of term tests, the Education Ministry has decided to hold only one examination per year for all Grades in schools from 2024, said Education Minister Susil Premajayantha while participating at ceremony in the Jayawardenepura Education Zone.
“At the end of each lesson or module, marks will be recorded as computer notes through an assessment and added to the exam scores at the end of the year,” the Minister said.
In the future, the school workbook for the three terms will be given to the students in three parts, as there will be one workbook for one school term.
Initially this is considered as 70% exam marks and 30% modular marks, but gradually it will be brought to the same range of marks up to 50%, he said.
With the implementation of this system, it is mandatory to attend school and work in the daily class. So there is no space or need for school students to go for extra classes, Minister Premajayantha added.
This way, the parents need not spend thousands of rupees on extra classes without getting caught in unnecessary competition.
The parents can spend that money on food and drinks of the children and the basic objectives of free education will come to fruition through such a process, he said.
Meanwhile, the minister said that it is expected to reduce the heavy weight of school students’ books and make them easy to carry.
The reduction in the weight of the school bag will also affect the health of the students by keeping their spines straight, the Minister said.
