A total of 3,249 driving licences have been suspended since January this year due to various illegal activities committed by motorists, Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) Commissioner General Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasingha said.
He told the Daily Mirror that these suspensions were made following court orders for various traffic violations committed by motorists.
Meanwhile, 84 driving licences were suspended for using duplicate National Identity Cards (NICs) provided by the respective owners.
A total of 3,350 driving licences were suspended for illegal activities, such as attempts to submit forged driving licences during the licence renewal process.
Additionally, 113 driving licence applications were halted after medical tests conducted by the National Transport Medical Institute declared the applicants unfit.
