Passport issuance adopts new method starting this week

• Applicants will now be required to register via the official website https://www.immigration.gov.lk when applying for Sri Lankan passports, starting July 16, 2024

A streamlined passport application process is set to be implemented for the convenience of applicants, the Immigration and Emigration Department announced yesterday.    

The department revealed plans to introduce a new e-passport system for Sri Lankans starting January 1, 2025, aimed at enhancing efficiency and safety.  

According to the Additional Controller General in a media release, applicants will now be required to register via the official website https://www.immigration.gov.lk when applying for Sri Lankan passports, starting July 16, 2024. This new methodology will be operational from Friday (19) for applicants registered on July 16, replacing the existing process in effect until tomorrow (18).  

Following registration, passport issuance will prioritize those who have completed the registration process.
