The former Vice Chancellor of the  Peradeniya University Professor Athula Senaratne and his son has been assaulted by a group of university students at his residence which is located at the university premises itself, police said yesterday.

Police said around 300 university students had held a protest near his residence and had initially attacked his residence. Then they assaulted the professor and his son. Professor Senaratne was admitted to hospital.
According to police the students had staged a protest after the victim’s son had allegedly knocked down two motorbikes belonging to two students.
