Police Sergeant killed, SI injured in Police mix up shooting in Weligama

A Police Sergeant from the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) was killed, and a sub-inspector sustained injuries during a shoot out, reportedly by the Police near a hotel in Weligama.  Police said a team of Police officers, in a van arrived at the Jamburegoda area early last morning for a raid. 

The officers in the van reportedly opened fire near a hotel located in the Weligama area and fled.  


A group of another Police officers who were on patrol at night chased the van and stopped it by shooting.  Later on, it was revealed that the van belonged to the Colombo Police Headquarters.   


The Police Sergeant succumbed to injuries sustained in the shooting, while the injured sub-inspector was admitted to Karapitiya Hospital.


A Special Police Team led by Senior DIG in charge of the Southern Province has initiated an investigation into the incident.
