Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has commenced an inquiry over the nature of how police had acted in dispersing the recent protests outside the universities of Colombo and Kelaniya, thus the subject minister has been summoned to the commission next Monday (13).
Public Security Minister Tiran Alles had been asked to appear before the Commission at 10.00 am on Monday, to explain how the police acted in dispersing protests that took place outside University of Colombo on March 7th and 8th., as well as outside Kelaniya University on Wednesday (8) night.
The Commission has decided to hold an investigation over the conduct of the police whilst dispersing these protests and the methods and tactics used by the latter, the HRCSL issuing a statement said yesterday.
Public concern is growing over the events that unfolded outside the University of Colombo on March 8th afternoon, where even number of students of two leading schools in the vicinity with its teachers and parents were seen affected by the tear gas attacks meant for the protesters.
