Police in soup over Athurugiriya shooting

• Transfer of 210 OICs turned down
• leaking of confessions using tv cameras is a violation of the law

The National Police Commission yesterday ordered the police to conduct an investigation into the leaking of the confession made by the Athurugiriya shooting suspect to the media and submit a report within two weeks .  

The Commission said such leaking of confessions by arrested suspects is in violation of the law .  

Both mainstream and social media gave wide publicity to the confessions. 

Police Commission also turned down a request to transfer 210 OICs of Police Stations on the eve of the Presidential Election and only allowed 24 essential transfers to allow stations to function.  “We are extremely vigilant about what is happening involving the police,” commission added.
