President calls for report on Kandakadu Rehab Centre incident

• Inmates turned violent and broke doors of the warehouse inside the rehabilitation camp

President Ranil Wickremesinghe had called for a full report on the Kandakadu Rehab Centre incident on Sunday.  The President stressed the need to take steps to avert a recurrence of such incidents. The President called for a report and stressed the need to avoid future incidents in the future following discussions with Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.

The inmates turned violent and broke the doors of the warehouse inside the rehabilitation camp, taking axes and machetes and setting fire to the two stores inside the camp on Sunday evening. 

It was reported that several persons including a nurse and an army soldier have been admitted to Polonnaruwa Hospital. The Army said about 150 detainees who came under attack had fled the centre. They arrived at the roadblock temporarily placed by the Army on the Somavathiya  - Kandakadu road.
