In response to the unfortunate incident involving a student at Katubedda Technical College and the subsequent request from Cabinet spokesperson and Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana, the President has issued a gazette notification declaring the Railway Department as an essential service.
He explained that this decision was made in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the railway staff and the public. It is considered a crucial measure to maintain law and order in the country.
Furthermore, Minister said that while announcing the railway as an essential service, strict legal action will be taken against individuals involved in any activities that may disrupt the service in the future. This proactive approach aims to maintain the smooth functioning of the railway system for the benefit of all.
Minister Gunawardana strongly denounced the sudden trade union action, labeling it as an act of “train terrorism.” He emphasized that the government will not yield to such acts of terror and will take appropriate measures to address and prevent any disruptions to the railway service.
“Nearly 18,000 workers are engaged in their duties, 84 employees for political or selfish motives have taken an arbitrary decision to stage a strike. Minister Bandula Gunawardana said he has informed railway workers on multiple occasions to resort to talks before staging any strikes which inconvenience hundreds of commuters,” minister Gunawardana said.
