Resolution on SL to be moved at UNHRC next Tuesday

• China, Russia, Cuba and Pakistan lead support for SL  
• India yet to commit its position

The resolution on Sri Lanka will be moved at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) next Tuesday, Daily Mirror learns. The resolution, by the core-group of countries led by the United Kingdom, has been rejected by Sri Lanka.  

The resolution, once moved on Tuesday, will be put to a vote later.  

There had been an Interactive Dialogue on the report of the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) earlier. At this meeting, 21 countries including ten states with voting rights at the UNHRC, spoke in support of Sri Lanka against the report and the resolution based on it. However, 15 countries including European Union stressed on the need to move the resolution.  A top source of the Foreign Ministry said China, Russia, Cuba and Pakistan were among the like-minded countries leading support for Sri Lanka. India had not committed its position even yesterday. During the last Interactive Dialogue, India called for the implementation of the 13th Amendment in full.  

The resolution calls upon the Sri Lankan Government  to ensure the prompt, thorough and impartial investigation and, if warranted, prosecution of all allegations of gross human rights violations and serious violations of international humanitarian law including for longstanding emblematic cases.

It also calls upon the Government to ensure the effective and independent functioning of the National Human Rights Commission, the Office on Missing Persons and the Office for Reparations.
