A staggering Rs.5.5 trillion worth of government assets acquired between 2006 and 2021 remain undocumented, raising concerns about mismanagement and potential misuse, according to the 2021 Auditor General’s report.
Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) leader MP Udaya Gammanpila highlighted the issue at a press conference yesterday, emphasising that even routine expenditures like car purchases and school constructions contribute to the expansion of state assets.
“Without proper documentation, it’s impossible to know if these assets are being used for private gain,” Mr. Gammanpila stated. He pointed to 2013 as a particularly troubling year, with no record of assets acquired through a staggering 94 per cent of the total expenditure.
“While some fixate on petty thefts, these colossal irregularities go unnoticed,” Mr. Gammanpila said.
The revelation has sparked concerns about transparency and accountability within the government, with calls for immediate action to rectify the situation.
