Ruhunu undergrads indulge in rowdy behaviour

The Faculty of Technology of the Ruhunu University was closed yesterday pending investigations of the alleged assault on the assistant warden of the hostel, his wife and mother-in-law.   

Dean of the Faculty Prof. Subhash Jayasinghe said the injured, Kusal Gunawardene, his wife, a lecturer of the arts faculty and his mother- in-law were admitted to Andapana divisional hospital in Kamburupitiya.   


Prof. Jayasinghe said more than 800 students had been provided with hostel facilities and that female students after 8 pm and the male students after 9 pm were not permitted to leave the hostels except in case of a medical emergency .   


He said a group of students who attempted to leave the hostels after 10.30 pm on Monday (26) had been refused permission by the security officers and that they had created a scene by behaving in an unruly manner in the upper storey of the hostel’   


Investigations revealed that they had switched off the lights and attempted to assault the Asst.Warden who rushed to the scene. However when he escaped them and ran away a group of students had given chase and assaulted him. They had assaulted his wife and his mother-in-law who intervened to save him.   


Prof. Jayasinghe further said he decided to close the faculty on the instructions of Vice Chancellor Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena until the situation was back to normal.   A police team under OIC Kamburupitiya Police Manoj Gunawardene is conducting further investigations on the instructions of SSP Pandula Weerasinghe.
