The Sri Lanka Belgium Association commissioned a water treatment project (RO plant) on January 20, in Kadurugaswewa, a remote village in Wadigawewa, Medirigiriya. The project, rehabilitated an abandoned water-well in the village and installed a water purifier.

This was initiated on a request made by the ‘Ran Tharu’ Women’s Association, which will continue to maintain it as a welfare project.

The foundation of the project was laid on November 24, 2022. Due to the collective, dedicated and united efforts of Government officials, villagers and the contractor, even under the prevalent difficult economic and weather conditions, the construction completed within a period of two months.

Funds for the project were donated by the “Adopti Sri Lanka Belgium VZW”. They have also funded three other similar projects in Mahasenpura, Kajuwaththa and Thalpotha in Polonnaruwa District.
Dayasiri Fernando President of the SLBA addressing the gathering on 20th Jan at Kadurugaswewa explained the operation and maintenance of the plant must be carried out by the Ran Tharu Women’s Association under the supervision of the Divisional Secretariat on water quality.    He also said that the time has come to look after peoples’ welfare requirements in a united manner and to be aware of the fact that Government funds are limited in this regard.   This project also considered setting up discussions between Kadurugaswewa village and SLBA located in Colombo, to enable the villagers to obtain advice to resolve some of the prevalent problems including marketing of village products at a fair-price. The members of SLBA are retired senior professionals of the public and private sector. Wadigawewa in Medirigiriya has fertile lands, abundance of water resources, sunlight and natural beauty to attract tourists. Although from time to time, the farmers are faced with cultivation issues, their lives can be better managed if existing resources and income are managed properly.
