Claiming that Sri Lanka, as a country, should be ashamed of having to seek IMF bailout, National People’s Power MP Vijitha Herath said yesterday even though an IMF loan would be a temporary relief to the economic crisis, the country would be further entrapped in debt.
The MP told Parliament that the country had to agree to suppressive conditions of the IMF where huge taxes were imposed, electricity tariffs were increased and profitable state institutions had to be sold out.
He said Ranil Wickeremesinghe and Malik Samarawickrema were over jubilant when they sold out Hambantota Port and obtained the cheque.
“The rulers who led the country to bankruptcy should be ashamed of having to obtain the IMF loan. The rulers claim that they can now obtain more loans from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB),” he said.
