The No 7 Helicopter Squadron of the Sri Lanka Air Force, fondly known as the “Cradle of Helicopter Pilots,” marked its 29th anniversary today, commemorating nearly three decades of unwavering service to the nation. Situated at the Sri Lanka Air Force Base Hingurakgoda, this prestigious squadron has a rich history, dating back to its inception in 1994.
Originally established as the No 401 Squadron on September 23, 1994, with a fleet comprising Bell 212 and Bell 206 helicopters, it was later re-designated as the No 7 Helicopter Squadron on March 23, 1996. Over the years, this squadron has played a pivotal role in numerous military operations, contributing significantly to the nation’s victories and continuing to provide vital support during times of need.
Currently under the command of Wing Commander Asanka Ratnayake, the squadron operates with Bell 212 and Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopters. It remains fully prepared to undertake a wide range of air operations with a focus on safety and professionalism. The No 7 Squadron stands ready 24/7, 365 days a year, serving as the first responder during times of national distress, whether caused by man-made crises or natural disasters, to save lives and protect property.
