UNP Deputy Leader and Minister Sajith Premadasa had requested Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in writing to name the party’s presidential candidate without further delay.
Speaking at the opening of Sandakusumgama and Sadetissagama model villages in Tissamaharama yesterday, Mr. Premadasa said he informed the party leader that delaying the naming of a presidential candidate was damaging to the UNP and the country as a whole. “This is also a blow to democracy,” he said.
He had further requested the premier to convene the working committee and parliamentary group to decide on the candidacy if it were difficult for him to name a candidate.
“I am ready to give leadership to the exercise of making UNP victorious. The presidential election is to be declared shortly and the party will have to be prepared for it,” he said.
Several politicians including State Minister Dilip Wedaarachchi participated in the event.
