Schools closed in some areas in Matara due to mini floods - DMC

  • People living in low-lying areas asked to remain vigilant

Inclement weather conditions caused by torrential rains had caused mini floods in the South with schools closed in the Akuressa Education zone in Matara District.    

In the Matara District, 1,965 persons have been affected according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).   
Several roads including Abeywela junction, Akuressa - Matara Road, the Akuressa Road were said to be under water.   


The water levels of Ging Ganga and Nilwala Ganga were rising as of last afternoon and the people living in low-lying areas were asked to remain vigilant.   


Meanwhile the Department of Education, Disaster Management Centre and Ministry of Health held discussions to decide on ways and means to minimize the inconvenience caused to children sitting for the GCE Ordinary Level examination due to the Southwest monsoon expected in the coming days. Contact Hotlines 117 or 1911 if children are unable to attend the examination as a result of bad weather.   


In addition, mini floods were reported in Baddegama - Galle and in the Puttalam District where six families were affected.
