Seven remanded for assaulting police officer

A group of seven individuals who had been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer on duty at a musical show in Getambe in Kandy causing him serious injuries were produced before Kandy Addl. Magistrate Jagath Peiris and remanded till April 27.  

The suspects Shehan Rukmal Bandara Disanayaka , Rashmi Shanika Ranasinha, Chamuditha Fernando, Lahiru Shammika Fernando, Bimsara Yohara Bandara Seneviratne, and Randika Silva were produced in court on the charge of obstructing the duty of the police officer and assault on him.  

Investigations revealed that a son of a mayoral candidate contesting the local government election in Kandy, two sons of the coordinating secretary of a prominent politician of the area and two sons of leading personalities.  

A spokesman for the hospital said the police officer had sustained a fracture due to the assault.  

Kandy police are conducting further investigations.
