Some corrupt Excise officials have solicited up to Rs.20 million to issue certain bar permits recently, National People’s Power activist said yesterday.  

NPP Executive Council member Wasantha Samarasinghe said that they have details of the bars, which these permits have been issued to and voice recordings of such corrupt deals.

Addressing a press briefing Samarasinghe said the questionable officials have even denied issuing permits those who refused to pay bribes.   “Because of these corrupt deals the state has incurred heavy losses and we are planning to take action against these Excise officers,” Samarasinghe said.   Meanwhile, former Parliamentarian Gamini Waleboda told the media over the weekend that some Excise officials who were involved in the fake security sticker on liquor bottles scam are trying to leave the country.   He said the President, the Police Criminal Investigation Department will be alerted about them.
