South Asia’s first-ever aircraft dismantling yard is to be established at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) soon, officials said. A MRIA senior official told the Daily Mirror exclusively that the project was expected to be completed soon after the proposal was approved.
The process will dismantle aircrafts without causing any sparks. Aircraft dismantling specialists attached to the airline will issue the first report on the aircraft and direct the local technicians to begin the dismantling.
The dismantling process will start after demarcations are issued by the engineers of the respective airlines, the official said.
“The aircrafts whose lifespan ends will be selected as for the dismantling process,” the official said.
Accordingly, the MRIA will receive a Boeing 700 series aircraft as the first aircraft to initiate the dismantling project, but no details have been provided yet, he added.
The MRIA senior official stated that once the project is implemented, the country will receive a large sum of money and more job opportunities.
The project is in the final stages of pending approval from the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) and the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).
