Whilst stating that stage is being set for a dictatorial administration in Sri Lanka, opposition MP Dullas Alahapperuma said some MPs have begged President Ranil Wickremesinghe not to dissolve Parliament till their vehicle permits and pensions are secured.
Speaking during a public gathering, the MP said Sri Lanka’s representative democracy will soon end and stage will be set for a dictatorial administration in the country.
“Provincial councils are being administered by the governors who are representatives of the President. The President has got control over Parliament and he is now able to dissolve it at any time. However some MPs are pleading with the President not to dissolve the House till they secure their pensions and vehicle permits. The local government bodies will soon come to be administered by special commissioners appointed by the President. Therefore circumstances would be conducive for setting up a dictatorship in this country,” the MP said.
“However the day will soon come when people would tell the president to ‘shut up’ and silence him,” he added.
Also, the MP said the Election Commission should hold local government election in line with the recent ruling given by the Supreme Court.
