North East Monsoon tames low pressure system in Bay of Bengal
By Yohan Perera
Weather conditions concerning Sri Lanka has taken a sudden change as the low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to weaken by the North East Monsoon conditions which has been established, Department of Meteorology said yesterday.
North East monsoon winds usually come from the land area of India. The winds which blow from India’s land area is usually dry. These winds could absorb the moisture in the low pressure area. This might reduce rains to a considerable proportions.
The low pressure system may not be devastating in such a scenario,” Director General Department of Meteorology Athula Karunanayake told Daily Mirror.
The low-pressure area still persists over southeast Bay of Bengal and is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards and reach over southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka – Tamil Nadu coasts around 11th December. Showers will occur at times in Northern, North-central, Eastern and North-western provinces.
However showers are expected in some places in Northern and North Central provinces at times.
The low pressure system was identified days after deep depression claimed 18 lives and affected thousands of people.
