The suspect arrested over the death of a businessman whose body was found in a swiming pool in Thalangama recently reportedly confessed to the police that he had killed the businessman following a dispute over their relationship.
The body of businessman Roshan Wanninayaka was found at his 3 storied building which was under construction at Pelawatta, Thalangama. The police on Sunday arrested the 27-year old suspect and his wife in connection with the death of the 49-year-old businessman from Wellampitiya.
According to the investigation, the suspect and the businessman were members of a gay men’s dating club and the suspect had maintained close relations with various people for money through the club.
After marriage, the suspect had reportedly left the gay club.However, he had been compelled to rejoin the gay club due to financial difficulties even though he was married.
The suspect had told police that he had befriended the deceased businessman in question through the gay club and had gone to meet him on January 30 at Pelawatte.
Police investigators found that both the victim and the suspect had arrived at the house. It was reported the suspect had asked the businessman for Rs 100,000 an argument had ensued since the businessman had refused to give the suspect money.
Police said the suspect had allegedly hit the businessman on the head with a club after which he had fallen. He had then dragged the businessman body and dumped it in the pool and taken the victim’s mobile phone and credit cards and returned to his wife’s house in Kolonnawa in the victim’s car.
Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said both the suspect and his wife had gone to Katunayake in the businessman’s car. He said they had obtained air tickets to Indonesia with the credit card of the businessman, and had not been able to go abroad due to a problem in obtaining visas. Meanwhile, the post mortem examination into the death of the businessman was conducted and it was found that the death was a result of blows to the head with a blunt object.
The spokesman said since the body of the businessman was not unrecognizable, a DNA test was to be conducted. The suspect couple were produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate Court and ordered to be detained 48 hours for further questioning.

The two suspects taken into custody in connection with the murder of a billionaire businessman in Thalangama were produced before Kaduwela Magistrate Chamini Wijebandara and detained by Colombo Crime Investigation Division on Court order for further questioning.
The Magistrate at the request of the Police permitted to refer the samples of the deceased’s body for DNA tests.
