Two killed in car-train accident at level crossing

A motorcar had bumped against the moving train at the level crossing near the fertilizer stores in Koggala causing the death of two individuals including a woman on the spot.   

The deceased Gardiyawasam Balage Amesh Iranda Silva (33), was a surveyor by profession and father of one child.  He was to celebrate his birthday today. The other Yapa Mudiyanselage Heenmenika (87) had been living in the former’s house as a servant. They were residents of Welhengoda in Ahangama.   


Investigations revealed the warning signals had been functioning at the time of the accident.The motorcar had been dragged onto a distance of about 40 metres with the two passengers trapped in the wreckage. Residents of the area rushed to the scene and evacuated the two passengers only to find them already dead.   


Investigations revealed they were on their way back after obtaining treatment for the woman at a private hospital in Galle when they met with accident. The motorcar had hit Beliatta bound express on the level crossing.   
The funerals was to take place today at Welhengoda in Ahangama.
