Two prison officials hospitalized following assault by prisoner in transit

A detainee remanded in the Dumbara Prison on murder charges assaulted two prison officials causing serious injuries to them when they were taking him to the Batticaloa courts in connection with another case.   

Police said the injured officers were admitted to the National Hospital, Kandy.   

The prisoner was being transported from the Dumbara Prison to Batticaloa along the Mahiyangana road when he turned aggressive and assaulted the jailor and a jail guard. The prison bus returned to Dumbara Prison and the officers were admitted to hospital.  The prisoner was taken under enhanced security to the Batticaloa courts.
