As the Labour Party won the 2024 General Election in the United Kingdom, British Tamil of Sri Lankan origin Uma Kumaran was victorious in the new constituency of Stratford and Bow taking 44.1% of the votes.
Labour has won 412 seats so far, meaning the Conservative Party has lost power for the first time in 14 years and has suffered one of the biggest defeats in its history, according to the BBC.
There were five candidates of Sri Lankan origin and only she has won the election.
She was born in East London and studied at Queen Mary University.
She has worked with the UN and global climate advocates to tackle climate change, helping London’s Mayor deliver life-changing policies like free school meals and new council homes.
Candidate Ranil Jayawardena of the Conservative Party who was in the fray also lost this time.
