United in art: Children collaborate to celebrate 35 years of CRC

Underscoring their commitment to creating a platform for children to express themselves, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is staging a one-of-a-kid art exhibition at the Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo, celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Child Rights Convention (CRC).   

The showcase has been co-created by about 100 children from across the country, from diverse ethnic backgrounds, ages and abilities – including art from children with special needs, visually impaired and those with hearing disabilities – each highlighting their visions of a brighter future.   

Every artwork speaks powerfully to themes close to their hearts, resonating with powerful themes like the right to education, peace, and protection, echoing their collective hope for a brighter tomorrow.   

This inclusive gallery underscores the message of “Leave No One Behind,” showing that all children, regardless of ability or background, have dreams for a better tomorrow – these young artists expressing their aspirations, passions, and calls for action on issues they hold dear through their individual works of art.   

“Some are darker, some are brighter, but all place rights to climate, to education, to a healthy living and a protective environment at the forefront. And this is really an initiative of having them express their opinions, and for us to take that into account as we move forward and work with Sri Lanka, and the children of Sri Lanka for a better and brighter future,” UNICEF Representative for Sri Lanka Christian Skoog said.   

Speaking on the convention, Skoog said, “The convention comprises all the rights that children have whether it’s related to health, nutrition, and a protective environment, getting a good education, and participating in any decisions that involve them or that affect them.”  

The exhibit, which began on Tuesday, will be open to the public until November 26.
