In the wake of the government change in Sri Lanka, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said that what happened in Sri Lanka politically is for their politics to work out.

Making his remarks during an interview in New York , he said India stepped forward in respect of Sri Lanka when it was facing a deep, economic crisis and it was frankly done when nobody else did it. “We did it in a timely manner. We did it on a scale. We put four and half a billion dollars effectively. What it did was stabilize the Sri Lankan economy. The rest of it was up to them. It is not like that we had political conditionality which accompanied that. We were doing it as good neighbours who did not want to see that kind of economic meltdown at our doorstep,” he said. He said it is not India’s intention to suggest that Sri Lanka’s political dynamics should adhere to what is better for India.
