In the face of some leading world economies collapsing, the Mahinda Rajapaksa government managed to ensure a robust growth rate by implementing Mahinda Chintana policies, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate Namal Rajapaksa said. Addressing an electoral meeting in Divulapitiya on August 24, he said the political stream that made Sri Lanka self-sufficient was defeated by a force that portrayed the lofty ideal of good governance in 2015.

He said, if elected to office, would carry forward development from where it stopped during the time of his father Mahinda Rajapaksa. Asserting that his party stood up to political challenges, he said the 2019 government had grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the then government launched the vaccination drive and resurrected the country from the pandemic. He said another conspiracy was hatched at that time to oust that government. “Our government collapsed. We did not allow the state machinery to collapse, though,” he said.
