Winning any election for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) led National People’s Power (NPP) is an impossible task given the number of seats and votes it had obtained during recent elections, a Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) said yesterday.

“NPP obtained only three parliamentary seats in the 2020 general election and obtained only around 500,000 votes at the last presidential elections. One will have to capture around seven million votes to win the presidential election this year.

How could a party which had obtained only 500,000 votes capture more than seven million votes at the presidential polls this year? Can NPP which obtained only three seats capture 113 seats in a general election? SJB MP Ashok Abeysinghe questioned at a media briefing. “There will be an additional number of registered voters for this year’s elections. However, all of them will not go to the polling booths. Accordingly, turnout will not increase much at this year’s polls, though there will be more registered voters,” he added.

“SJB like many other parties cannot win elections without an alliance. Even the NPP is trying to get an alliance in place.Likewise, we in the SJB are also trying to form an alliance to contest future elections,” he also said.
