A young woman who had left home for employment last Sunday and had gone missing for six days has been killed according to the statement of a suspect arrested in connection with the incident.
Police that examined the CCTV recordings in the area arrested and questioned the suspect who had followed the young woman on her way to take bus to her place of work in Gelioya.
Under interrogation, he confessed that he forced the woman to go with him to the jungle and when she refused he took her by force to the nearby coconut estate, strangled her to death and buried the body.
During investigations, the police recovered the parts of her umbrella, her pair of slippers and the bottle of water from the scene.
Police that guarded the scene pending further investigations said that steps would be taken to make a report to court and exhume the body.
The young woman who is alleged to have been killed Fathima Moonavuvara (22) was an employee of a pharmacy in Gelioya, and a resident of Elpitiya in Gampola Police area. She had gone missing since last Sunday (7) after she left home for employment.
Gampola Police said further investigations will continue based on CCTV recordings.
