Arundika quits from State Ministry

State Minister Arundika Fernando has resigned from his ministerial portfolio yesterday after his son was arrested over the clash at the Ragama Medical Faculty.
The son of State Minister Arundika Fernando was arrested for assaulting the students at the Ragama Medical Faculty.
The suspect, 23-year-old Avinda Randila Jehan Fernando was arrested by the Ragama Police after surrendering through a lawyer on Wednesday night.
A total of 10 suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. They were later remanded till February 7 after being produced before Wattala Magistrate’s Court. However, four students were released on bail. Police said the BMW car which was used in the attack was taken into custody by the Ragama Police in the Kalubowila area.
Several students at the Kelaniya University’s Faculty of Medicine were injured after a group of people who had forcibly entered the men’s hostel of the Kelaniya University’s Medical Faculty in Ragama and attacked them.
The assailants had reportedly arrived in two cars and had fled after the attack, however, the students had managed to apprehend one of the individuals along with a car, which reportedly belongs to the Coconut Development Authority.
Following the incident, State Minister Fernando said on Wednesday that he would resign if it was proved he was involved in the clash. The Minister said yesterday he would resign from his State Ministry until investigations into the incident were completed.
