Catholic Church condemns defamatory statements made on the Buddha

Whilst condemning the recent defamatory statements made by persons such as Natasha Edirisooriya and others, the Catholic Church yesterday alleged that some politicians are making use of these statements for political mileage.   

 Member of the communication unit of archdiocese of Colombo Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando said people should be aware of these politicians who want to get mileage out of this situation and act with diligence without giving way to emotional feelings.   


“We vehemently condemn defamatory statements made on Buddha, Buddhism and Buddhist culture. We also call for impartial investigations on those who make these statements and try them according to the law,” Dr. Fernando told a press conference. 

 
He claimed that he is making these requests on behalf of Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.   “The response made on these statements that have been made by people such as Natasha Edirisooriya adds fuel to the fire.
