Galle Face Protesters say unaware about IMF visit

Protesters at Galle Face, who launched a fresh protest demonstration at the entrance to the Finance ministry blocking Lotus Road, Colombo yesterday said that they were unaware that the International Monetory Fund representatives were here and had no intention to obstruct dialogue between the IMF and Finance Ministry officials.   

They told media that the gathering of activists around the president’s office last morning was to symbolically protest the president’s birthday celebrations, and not to obstruct members of the International Monetary Fund or finance ministry officials.  

They also said they had absolutely no intention of causing a hindrance or obstruction to the delegation of any country or international institution such as the International Monetary Fund. They also categorically stated that the protesters’ opposition is to the failed President and not to international institutions.  

It also strongly condemned the illegal and arbitrary arrest of 21 active members of the struggle in front of the Presidential Secretariat.
