  • The organization of Aragalaya by certain international entities with  affiliations to the Left has raised concerns about their intentions

In response to alleged remarks about Buddhism, SLPP MP Sarath Weerasekara has suggested that the case of Natasha Edirisooriya be examined under Section 9 of the Constitution and the Penal Code.   The MP expressed concerns over the potential implications if appropriate action is not taken.  “The importance of addressing instances that may insult Buddhism is underscored by the sentiments of Buddhists in this country,” stated MP Weerasekara.

“Provisions within the Constitution and the Penal Code serve to address such matters, and it is crucial that they are properly enforced to prevent potential repercussions.”

“It is disheartening to witness instances where Buddhism and Buddha have faced disrespect, such as during the Aragalaya event, where black paper Vesak lanterns were displayed,” the MP said.   “The organization of Aragalaya by certain international entities with affiliations to the Left has raised concerns about their intentions regarding Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage and the unity among Buddhists. It is essential to maintain respect for all religions, and any acts of insult towards them should be promptly addressed,” he said.

“Allegations suggest that not only did Natasha Edirisooriya insult Buddha, but she also used abusive language. The Cybercrimes Unit of CID has initiated an investigation into the matter,” he noted.
