NPC delegates powers to Police dept.

The National Police Commission has delegated some of its powers to the Inspector General of Police and to the Sri Lanka Police Department in respect of Chief Inspectors and lower ranks, with effect from July 24, 2023.  

According to an extra ordinary gazette notification the NPC has delegated its powers to the IGP and Police Department in respect of appointment, promotion, transfer, disciplinary control and dismissal of Police Officers, made by the National Police Commission, in terms of Article 155G of the Constitution and also with such Conditions and any Rules, Regulations and other Procedures which the Commission from time to time formulate.   Accordingly, the IGP and the Police department will have the powers to exercise above mentioned action on Chief Inspectors, Inspector of Police, Sub Inspectors, Police Sergeants and Police Constables.  

However, in decisions involving superior police officers-Police Stations Officer In-charge (OICs), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Superintendent of Police (SP), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Deputy Inspector Generals (DIG) and Senior DIGs, the approval of the National Police Commission is required, sources said.  
The gazette also stated that, in the event of any question arising in relation to any delegation of Powers or as to the exercise of Power so delegated, the decision of the National Police Commission shall be final and conclusive.
