A Police sergeant and two others who had gone hunting at night in the Issennewa forest reserve were arrested, and the T56 duty weapon of the police officer seized by the Wahalkada police on Wednesday night.
The police officer is attached to the Rotawewa police post under the Morawewa police. The other two suspects are residents of the Wahalkada area and are about 50 years old. One of them is a timekeeper for the Passenger Transport Authority.
Investigations revealed that the police sergeant who was on duty at the police post had met the other two suspects watching a Chena in the Issennewa area, had given them his duty weapon to kill a wild animal for meat, and had slept in the watch hut.
A team of police officers under OIC Wahalkada Police R.M.D. Harischandra patrolling the area had arrested them and seized the weapon. Under interrogation, they stated that they got the weapon from the police sergeant and that he was sleeping in the hut.
The police team had rushed to the watch hut awakened the police sergeant who was fast asleep, and arrested him.
The suspects were to be produced before court last morning.
