Poultry farmers to ignore controlled price

  • The Consumer Affairs Authority on Friday gazetted the price of a white egg as Rs 43 and the price of brown egg at Rs 45

The All Ceylon poultry Industrialists Association yesterday said it was impossible to sell eggs at the controlled prices set by the government.   

Accordingly  All Ceylon Egg Suppliers Association had informed it’s members not to sell an egg at a price which is not less than Rs.55.   


All Ceylon poultry Industrialists Association President Sarath Ratnayake told media that Ministry of Livestock Development computes the production cost of an egg every month and the amount that have been computed for this month ranges from Rs 49 to Rs 50.   


The Consumer Affairs Authority on Friday gazetted the price of a white egg as Rs 43 and the price of a brown egg at Rs 45.   


“ The prices were fixed by the government. The Minister of Trade and the Chairman of Consumer Affairs Authority have not engaged in poultry industry. They will understand the real situation only if they enter the industry. 
Also retailers have informed us that they cannot sell an egg at the price stipulated by the authorities,” Ratnayake said.   


However the association after a discussion with Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on August 19 earlier decided to reduce the price of an egg from August 22.
