Tense situation outside Kelaniya Uni as police attack student protesters Mudalige, Jinarathana Thera and six others arrested

Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) Convener Wasantha Mudalige, Jinarathana Thera and six other student activists were arrested when a student protest outside Kelaniya University was obstructed and attacked by police late last night.  

A tense situation prevailed when a large group of students tried to stage a demonstration outside the Kelaniya University premises last night, which was obstructed by hundreds of policemen armed with riot gear and water cannon trucks.  

The advancing student protest soon came under police attack where eight protesters including Mudalige were arrested.  

Attorney Nuwan Bopage told the Daily Mirror the students were taken into Ragama Police custody and were locked up in a cell until they are to be produced in courts today.  
Bopage said all eight students including Mudalige and Jinarathana Thera have suffered injuries in the police attack and they were yet to be medically attended at the time this edition went to press at 1.00 am today.
