The price of one kilogram of wheat flour has been increased by Rs. 13 from Monday night (3), the All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association (ACBOA) said.
The Association’s President, N.K. Jayawardena, told the Daily Mirror that both wheat flour importing companies (Prima Ceylon (Pvt) Limited and Serendib Flour Mills (Pvt) Ltd) have increased prices.
Even though the price was increased, there is a huge shortage of wheat flour in the market and among the companies.
Accordingly, after increasing the prices, a sack of 50 kg of wheat flour will cost Rs. 14,500.
However, Jayawardena said that the association has not decided to increase the price of bakery items, including bread. The economic downturn and the implementation of the Social Security Contribution Tax have resulted in a 400% increase in the price of bakery ingredients.
Furthermore, Trade, Commerce, and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando previously stated that measures would be taken next week to reduce the price of wheat flour.
Also, the minister said in parliament that the price of wheat flour is expected to be reduced by up to Rs. 250 per kilogram.
