Durdans Laboratory Services (DLS), the fully-fledged laboratory arm of the Joint Commission International Approved Durdans Hospital whilst retaining its traditional test panel recently made available novel tests to keep up with modern developments in laboratory medicine.
Noteworthy are the predictive tests whose outcomes can be utilized to avert ‘future illness / disease’. Durdans laboratory services is a medical testing facility meeting the contemporary investigative/extrapolative requirements of medicine, works with ultra-modern testing equipment, highest quality analytical reagents, and aptly educated and experienced medical laboratory technologists.
Amongst the recently introduced tests is the ‘Neonatal TSH Screening Test’ which is known as Neonatal TSH (NEO-TSH). This test revolves round the likelihood of adverse consequences of low TSH production in the newborn and intervention to normalise growth and development of the newborn. In keeping with the National Health Policy of ‘compulsory screening of newborns’, Durdans laboratory services all across the island are geared to provide the NEO-TSH screen to local hospitals, maternity homes and family practices.
The escalating number of individuals becoming diabetics and its early onset seen more often in present times, Durdans reinforced laboratory tests related to diabetes mellitus. The common range of laboratory tests related to diabetes (e.g. Blood sugar test, Oral glucose tolerance test, Glycohaemoglobin (=HbA1C) test, Frucotsamine test) is useful only when diabetes has already set in. However, in this era in which younger individuals become diabetics and Durdans Laboratory Services introduced two ultra-modern laboratory tests with predictive value.
The HOMA-IR Index assessment, which evaluates the body’s insulin resistance and pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction concurrently, is useful in predicting predisposition to diabetes. It requires only a blood sample after an overnight fast. With the findings of the HOMA-IR Index assessment and Adiponectin assay, Clinicians are able to predetermine diabetes risk in an individual and intervene to avert Diabetes Mellitus.
The saying “once a stone former – always a stone former” prompted the development of the test to ascertain the lithogenic nature of urine in vulnerable subjects. Analysis of renal stones, passed in the urine (lithuresis) or surgically removed, using Infrared Spectroscopy Kidney Stone Analysis (FTIR) is another test performed exclusively at Durdans laboratory services. The analytical information collected through these tests is invaluable for managing the recurrence of the renal stone disease (urolithiasis).
The investigation Lithogenic Urine test (to determine the tendency to stone formation) is only available with the Durdans Laboratory Services. The findings will guide Urologist to prevent urolithiasis and the resulting intractable suffering by appropriate therapeutic intervention. It requires only a 10mL sample of urine (first morning).
The ultramodern histopathology section of Durdans Laboratory Services with state-of the-art equipment, the educated highly experienced Medical Laboratory Technologists and the panel of over twenty Eminent Histopathologists on-call can provide an accurate diagnostic service with a minimum waiting time.
The ISO 15189 certified Durdans Laboratory Services also offers investigations such as Vitamin D level testing for determining bone health in children and adults.
