A latest research conducted by the University of Peradeniya has confirmed locally produced herbal immune booster ‘Praana’ as an ideal immune booster against a broad range of new respiratory viruses and bacteria, including the emerging variants of the COVID-19 virus.
The study was recently conducted by Senior Professor of Parasitology Jayantha Rajapakse of the Department of Pathobiology, at the University of Peradeniya.
Addressing a media briefing held at the University of Peradeniya early this month, Prof. Rajapakse revealed that the laboratory research confirmed the effectiveness of ‘Praana’ as an enhancer of the primary immunity of the human body, which is considered the first line of defence against foreign antigens, including the emerging variants of the COVID-19 virus.

Further, the study, which included toxicology evaluation, confirmed 100 percent safety for human consumption of the herbal drink. Praana already has been approved as an immunity booster by the Department of Ayurveda.
“Praana contains a concoction of herbal ingredients, including cardamom, cinnamon, pepper, thalisa pathra, long pepper, ginger, pathpadagam, una kapuru and sukiri.
We inherit primary immunity through genes. However, we have the ability to develop and improve primary immunity. By enhancing our primary immunity, our body can defend our body against any kind of virus that enters our body. Although we have not conducted a specific clinical research into the COVID-19 virus, our research confirmed that we can see the herbal boosting properties of this herbal drink,” Prof. Rajapakse elaborated.
As several herbal products have flooded the market claiming immunity boosting properties, he highlighted that most of these products, if not all, haven’t been tested in a laboratory. Therefore, he pointed out that such products might not only have an impact on immunity but also they could be harmful for the body.
Speaking of primary and secondary immunities, Prof. Rajapakse stressed on the need to focus more on enhancing primary immunity in order to protect ourselves from the emerging variants of COVID-19. “Basically, we receive a boost to the secondary immunity through a vaccine, which is designed to defend our body against a particular virus. Therefore, there’s a big difference between primary and secondary immunities. As we are aware, there is various of COVID-19 virus. So, if we have a high level of primary immunity, our bodies would have the ability to fight against any kind of virus,” he explained.
