The Industrial Management Department of the University of Kelaniya together with the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies and the local affiliate of Competency-based Economies Through Formation of Enterprise (CEFE) presents a workshop on ‘Social Entrepreneurship, Social Innovation and Social Value Creation’. The workshop is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies, BMICH.

The key resource person is Professor Jay Weerawardena of the UQ Business School, University of Queensland, Australia, who has worked with social enterprises for over 15 years. Professor Jay’s teaching, research, consultancy and workshops in this area are highly respected by academics and practitioners around the world.

Sarvodaya Movement Executive Director Chamindha Rajakaruna will also share decades of Sarvodaya’s experience in creating social value and building a sustainable enterprise. This interactive workshop will also feature a case study of women empowerment to address social issues.

This pioneering workshop on social entrepreneurship conducted in Sri Lanka aims to provide insights into the nature of social entrepreneurship in a global setting, assess how social enterprises operate and lessons for the developing world, assess how social enterprises can deliver sustained social value and how social enterprises can be ignited, built and nurtured.

Social entrepreneurs, not-for-profits, local and international funding agencies, organisations involved in microfinancing, academics, government ministries, policy planners and all those interested in social entrepreneurship are welcome to take part in this workshop.

The popularity of social entrepreneurship is growing across the world, with tremendous academic, managerial and public policy interest in understanding its role in social value creation. Social entrepreneurs contribute through a multitude of activities ranging from helping slum children working in sweatshops in developing countries to addressing poverty and environmental degradation. With decreasing government funding and increasing social and community issues, social entrepreneurs have embarked on building financially sustainable enterprises through business model innovation which includes both public and private sector partnerships.
