Furthering its leadership in the Internet of things (IoT) smart innovation space, Dialog announced last week, the pilot launch of the first application of its ‘Level Alert’ IoT solution.

The first application of the Level Alert solution developed in partnership with the University of Moratuwa Dialog Mobile Communications Research lab is in the area of Trash Collection (Alerts). The solution is currently being piloted by Abans Environmental Services.

The IoT-based smart sensor designed by the University of Moratuwa Dialog Mobile Communications Research lab has been applied to create a ‘Smart Trash Bin’ whereby an ultrasonic sensor scans the bins at a preprogrammed time interval and then sends an alert or notification to the environmental services company and/or the resident or manager of the premises with respect to the level of garbage. Abans Environmental Services (Pvt.) Ltd Director Phiroze Pestonjee said, “We are a leading solid waste management company. Our daily garbage collection exceeds 400 metric tons. The marriage between garbage collection and technology will definitely be a benefit for the country and its citizens. With the launch of Trash Alert, we will be able to efficiently provide our services to the residents of the Colombo Municipal Council area, where we collect their garbage. Also, it will align with the government’s policy on the Megapolis initiative.”

Dialog Axiata Chief Digital Services Officer Fariq Cadre explained, “This smart solution is of particular significance to corporates with a strong environment conscience and dedication to reducing their carbon footprint. There is no doubt that Colombo needs solid waste management solutions that will help the city gear up to its aspirations to be a ‘smart’ city as envisioned by the government’s urban development plans. Trash Alert is an enterprise solution, where corporates will not only get a smart bin-module but also a portal to provision, assign and allocate devices.

Dialog recently launched the IsayYouDo, IoT open innovation portal, which will forthwith enable a variety of IoT devices to be incorporated into simple to design consumer and enterprise solutions.
Speaking further on broader application of the Level sensor, Cadre added, “It is even more significant that the same family of sensors can be used to develop a variety of other similar applications related to level detection. The Trash Collection solution is just the first such application and we look forward to innovators across our Ideamart and IsayYouDo platforms to create a variety of related applications.”
