New Delhi (dpa), 12 Aug, 2021 - Four more bodies were recovered from the site of a landslide in a mountainous region in northern India on Thursday, raising the death count to 14, officials said.
A bus and a few cars were swept into a ravine as boulders and rocks rolled down a hillside along a mountain highway in Himachal Pradesh state’s Kinnaur district on Wednesday. The region was hit by heavy monsoon rains early this week.
State chief minister Jai Ram Thakur told reporters that 13 people were injured and 16 more were still missing.
However, local media citing police sources reported that up to 30 people could still be trapped under the debris.
Rescue operations were halted temporarily on Thursday as stones and mud were still coming down the hill, officials said.
Landslides and floods are a common occurrence during India’s monsoon season, which runs from June to the end of September.
